The Formentini winery has been active in enhancing the viticultural soul of Collio since as far back as 1520, when Count Vinciguerra Formentini purchased the Castle of San Floriano. In its more than 500 years of history, the Formentini Counts have always been able to offer high quality wines, appreciated by nobles, clergymen and politicians of all ages. Today the winery is led by the Gruppo Italiano Vini, the most important in Italy in terms of the production and marketing of fine wines, which can boast numerous brands scattered throughout the Peninsula. Since 2019, the Group has then entrusted the winemaking management to Pietro Bertè, a highly skilled winemaker from Trentino.
There are 58 hectares of vineyards managed by the Formentini estate, dedicated to the indigenous and international varieties of Collio's winemaking tradition, such as Ribolla Gialla, Friulano, Malvasia Istriana, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Grigio and Merlot, the only red grape grown by the winery. The vineyards are mainly located in the municipalities of San Floriano del Collio, Oslavia, Giasbana and Cormons, exactly in 9 different locations characterized by significant temperature ranges between day and night, a factor that favors the optimal development of aromatic precursors in the grapes. The rows of vines also benefit from excellent exposures and the characteristic Ponca, a type of soil typical of Collio that consists of an alternation of marl and sandstone of marine origin. After harvest, the grapes undergo a day of pre-fermentation cryomaceration, an important step to enhance the wines' aromas. Different types of wine containers, such as stainless steel tanks, barriques, French oak tonneaux and large barrels, are adopted for temperature-controlled fermentations and subsequent aging, depending on the wine in question.
The Friulian estate Formentini makes its mark with a clear preponderance of white production, based on mostly monovarietal expressions of the grape varieties that have made Collio great. These are clean and refined wines, characterized by intense and mineral aromas capable of seducing any wine lover.
