The Montefalco Rosso emerges from the ancient and hilly heart of the Umbria region and is produced with Sangiovese and Sagrantino grapes in a restricted area of 5 communes of medieval origin in the province of Perugia: Montefalco, Bevagna, Gualdo Cattaneo, Castel Ritaldi and Giano dell'Umbria. It ages for at least 18 months in the cellar and earns the Riserva designation only after 30 months, of which at least 12 in wood. Generally smoother and juicier than Sagrantino, it has a full-bodied, structured and intense personality, capable of elegantly and impeccably accompanying tasty first courses, game, roasts, grilled meat, mushrooms, truffles and other traditional earthy dishes typical of the central-Italian Apennines.

The limited production area of Rosso di Montefalco has been populated since ancient times. During the Roman period it was chosen by the most important and wealthy figures of the Italian Republic as the site of splendid patrician villas. During the Middle Ages, villages were built, which can still be visited today and which, with their ancient churches, offer valuable historical and artistic testimony. Among these, the frescoes stand out, which are an essential part of the evocative atmosphere of Umbrian painting and the spirituality of this area.
The name of the area, originally called Coccorone, is attributed to Frederick II who frequented it for falcon hunting. Legend has it that in the winter between 1249 and 1250, the emperor's falcons all landed in the village of Coccorone, preferring it to the surrounding countryside, and were returned to their owner by the inhabitants. From that moment on, the village assumed its current name.
This territory takes its name from the municipality of the same name, considered one of the most beautiful villages in Italy and defined in 2007 by the Fai as "Italy's ideal city", and includes 4 other municipalities. It is a hilly area between 220 and 470 metres above sea level, populated by woods, olive groves and vineyards that surround the beautiful and evocative medieval villages. The climate is continental, with hot but windy summers and cold, moderately rainy winters, with occasional snowfalls. The soil is essentially clayey and sandy, with the presence of marl. In order to preserve this climatic and soil heritage, which is very suitable for the production of Umbrian wines, the "New Green Revolution" project was recently inaugurated. The aim of the project is to enhance the peculiarities of the area and spread a new awareness through specialised study and training courses for agricultural technicians and farm operators.
The production regulations, established in 1979, define the territory according to the most ancient traditions. The Rosso is composed of Sangiovese, Sagrantino and up to 30% of other grapes. The Bianco, on the other hand, which is less well known but equally appreciated, is composed mainly of Grechetto, with the possible addition of Trebbiano and other white grapes.
Today, a number of producers have succeeded, thanks to their expertise, in making the expressions created by the area's very long winemaking tradition famous worldwide. Renowned by international critics and now present and in demand in the most exclusive restaurants on the planet, the reds produced here are distinguished by their structure, intensity, warmth and longevity. Among the best known examples is the Montefalco Rosso Caprai, with its dry, fresh and particularly balanced flavour, as well as Perticaia and Milziade Antano, which is a real icon. Extraordinarily esteemed throughout the world by niches of connoisseurs is the winemaker Tabarrini, creator of authentic territorial pearls, while Paolo Bea has become the icon of an artisanal and very traditional production, followed by small producers such as Raina and Fongoli.
Rosso Montefalco is generally intense, full-bodied and concentrated, softened by ageing in wood for varying lengths of time. It emanates rich and full scents: ripe red fruit combines with earthy, woody, wild and spiced hints. The taste is full, dry and structured, with good persistence. The energetic, tannic and sustained imprint of Sagrantino blends with the warmth of Sangiovese, which in Umbria always expresses itself with generosity and warmth. Because of these qualities it is able to evolve positively in the bottle for years and, in some cases, for decades, achieving remarkable longevity.
Endowed with an innate gastronomic potential, Montefalco Rosso wines are excellent companions on the dinner table. Over the centuries, the locals have developed unique gastronomic traditions that are now valued and presented in the most elegant restaurants around the world.
The land-based cuisine of the central Italian Apennines is enhanced by this warm, deep and intense enological expression. We are talking not only about the regional pork but also about dishes such as beef, mushrooms and black truffles. These are gastronomic experiences suitable for those who love strong and very typical flavours, often seasoned with preparations based on pepper, salt and garlic. Pork, sausages, game, spit-roasted meats and first courses with truffles are the real stars. Seasoned and tasty cheeses such as pecorino, caciotta and salted ricotta should not be forgotten either.
