Cantina Kurtatsch is a South Tyrolean cooperative that works with a focus on quality with the aim of offering great territorial wines. The winery brings together 27 employees and as many as 190 families, forming a young team driven by an innovative and ambitious spirit that never loses sight of sustainability, another essential value for Kellerei Kurtatsch. Founded in 1900 in Kurtatsch on the Wine Road, 'Kurtatsch' in German, this cooperative winery is one of the oldest in the region. Its birth was a direct consequence of the crisis afflicting the wine sector, a factor that prompted 42 far-sighted winegrowers to join forces.
There are 190 hectares cultivated by the large family of Cantina Kurtatsch, cultivated with love by each member. The vineyards are very diverse in terms of soil matrix and altitude, with altitudes ranging from 220 to a good 900 metres above sea level and soils characterised by varying contents of sand, clay, gravel, limestone, dolomite and red sandstone. In general, the lower vineyards, characterised by a warmer climate, are dedicated to red grapes, which are able to reach perfect ripeness here, while the higher vineyards are ideal for growing white grapes. The slopes are very steep, with gradients of up to 80 per cent, and the temperature range between day and night is very significant. On these environmental, soil and climatic parameters, the members of the Kurtatsch Winery grow the Lagrein, Schiava, Moscato Rosa, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Nero, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Bianco, Pinot Grigio, Chardonnay, Gewürztraminer, Müller-Thurgau, Moscato Giallo and Riesling vines. Fermentation mostly takes place in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks, so as to preserve the aromas of the must, while large wooden barrels, cement vats and even steel containers are used for the subsequent maturation phase, depending on the label in question.
From white to red wines, including sparkling wines and rosé wines, the Kurtatsch Winery's production reflects the qualities of the Kurtatsch terroir, with fresh and fragrant expressions that are at the top of regional quality.
