Marchese D'Azeglio's Derthona is a wine white produced from Timorasso grapes, increasingly a revelation in the Italian white wine scene. A grape variety rediscovered in recent decades, it produces some of the identity wines of eastern Piedmont. The nose has intense aromas of white fruit, flowers and pollen, along with strong hints of citrus and Mediterranean scrub. Fresh and textural, it is not heavy but has a pulpy crispness. An excellent wine with both fish and light white meats
Derthona Marchese D'Azeglio, produced by the La Lomellina di Gavi Marchese Raggio winery, is the result of a project to recover the land and vineyards of the Tortonese area, linked to the statesman and writer Massimo d'Azeglio, to whom the branding of this range of wines is dedicated. It is made from a grape typical of the area: the Timorasso. It is an ancient indigenous variety, abandoned over the centuries in favour of vines that are easier to grow, more productive and commercially more remunerative. Only in the last few decades has it been recovered thanks to the tenacious work of a few local winegrowers, who have highlighted its extraordinary oenological potential.
The white Derthona Marchese D'Azeglio was born in the Colli Tortonesi area, in one of Piedmont's historic estates. The La Lomellina di Gavi Marchese Raggio company has been cultivating vines and producing wine in the southern part of the region for more than two centuries. The Timorasso vineyards are located in the Sarezzano area, at an altitude of approximately 300 metres above sea level with a south-eastern exposure. The soils are clayey limestone, and the climate is mild and breezy, already influenced by the sea breezes that blow inland. Harvesting is carried out manually towards the end of September, and the best grapes undergo a pre-fermentation cold maceration for 12-18 hours. A gentle pressing follows to extract only the free-run juice, which ferments in stainless steel tanks at a controlled temperature of 15-16 °C. The wine matures on the lees in stainless steel with frequent bâtonnage for about a year, also carrying out malolactic fermentation. Before release, it rests for 4 months in a bottle,
The Timorasso Derthona Marchese D'Azeglio of the La Lomellina di Gavi Marchese Raggio estate is a white wine with a strong personality, which well represents and highlights the extraordinary characteristics of one of the emerging vines on our wine scene. Light yellow in colour with golden reflections, it expresses on the nose aromas of wildflowers, chamomile, aromas of white-fleshed fruit, citrus fragrances and vegetal hints of officinal herbs. Of good structure and aromatic richness, it has rich and intense aromas, deep and persistent, accompanying a long and very fresh finish.
