Elio Perrone's Barbera d'Asti Superiore "Mongovone" is a label made with extreme care to enhance the value of old vines planted in the 1930s. It is a version of absolute excellence, very far from the young, ready-to-drink interpretations of the grape variety. Grapes of particular aromatic concentration and a long aging in wood, reveal the more complex and harmonious character of the vine, which softens the exuberant freshness to express itself a more harmonious, balanced and complex way.
"Mongovone," Elio Perrone's Barbera d'Asti Superiore, is the fruit of the great passion of one of Piedmont's most interesting vignerons, who makes great artisanal wines. The grapes come from vineyards cultivated in the prized Mongovone area, among the absolute best suited for Barbera. The vineyards are located in a high hillside area, at an elevation of about 350 meters above sea level, with a wonderful sunny and well-ventilated midday exposure. The vines are about 80 years old and produce a few clusters per plant that are particularly rich in aromas. After the harvest is complete, the grapes are destemmed and fermented in temperature-controlled stainless steel vats. The wine matures for a period of 12 months in new French oak barrels and completes aging with several months in the bottle.
The Barbera d'Asti Superiore "Mongovone" wine, made by Elio Perrone, is a bottle that stands out in the panorama of Barbera labels for its frank and authentic profile, which highlights its full potential. In the goblet it has a dark ruby red color with luminous purple highlights. The olfactory picture expresses intense and rich aromas of ripe cherries, dark berry fruits, black currants, blueberries, blackberries, black cherries under spirits, nuances of oriental spices and noble woods. The palate has a good structure, with ripe tannins well integrated in a fruity and dense aromatic sip, enhanced by elegant tertiary evolutions. The finish is long and very persistent, with a savory and very fresh closure, returning to pleasant spicy sensations. A label that reveals the noble face of the great Piedmontese grape variety.
