Gewurztraminer

Gewurztraminer is an exhilarating and seductive white wine, offering an intense blend of aromas, a feast of flowers and tropical fruit. It comes from the aromatic pink grape variety of the same name, originally from the Alto Adige region (also known as South Tyrol): 'gewurz' means 'spicy', while Tramin is the German name for Termeno, a charming village in the province of Bolzano. The South Tyrolean interpretations are fresh and aromatic, with typical scents of lychee, white peach and wild rose, and suitable throughout meals. The French region of Alsace on the other hand produces very prestigious expressions, which are powerful and complex, more or less sweet or spicy, and can be paired with tasty blue cheeses or creamy desserts. Its intense and strong personality also makes it suitable for accompanying fatty grilled fish or soups and highly seasoned white meats. In all its possible versions, it is now known worldwide for its exuberant, aromatic, elegant and complex soul.

The Origins of Gewurztraminer

Mainly found in the northern regions, including Alsace and Germany, the vine used to produce the best Gewurztraminer is born from the diversification of wild species wisely chosen and combined. In terms of genetics, it is worth highlighting the close relationship between the Pinot grape variety and the one from which it derives its name. They are particularly similar in terms of their characteristics, and their link could be an ancient wild white grape variety, known in Switzerland as Gwäss or Gouais Blanc, which is now almost extinct. Used exclusively for winemaking, the grapes are not suitable for eating due to their extremely sweet taste. They are whitish in colour with pink shades, have a spicy taste, strong aromas and precise, well-defined scents.

Previously known as a black grape variety, it changed to the white grape variety after a small ice age between the 14th and mid-19th centuries. The first Gewurztraminer wine is said to date back to 1242, made from white grapes from areas between northern France and southern Germany, native places where these grapes were widespread. At an etymological level, experts also suggest other hypotheses regarding the terms that make up the word Gewurztraminer, in addition to the one associated with today's production locality: Tramin. One of the most widely accepted hypotheses is the association with the word Terminus, the Latin name for the northern area where the last Roman outposts were located and where soldiers often stopped to recover their energy after exhausting battles. A second hypothesis, on the other hand, is that it comes from the Greek language, a word that before its linguistic evolution signified quality.

The Ideal Pairings

In the centuries following the 13th century, its strong personality, distinct taste and alcoholic content made this variety of wine less well-known than others, until today, where its qualities are known and exploited for interesting and original pairings. Summarised in a wine-making process that is careful and attentive in every aspect, the characteristics of this grape variety are elegantly expressed in the Gewurztraminer Tramin, produced by a renowned winery located in the Termeno valley. The intense, well-balanced taste and aromas of exotic fruit and rose petals make Gewurztraminer a perfect match for dishes with bold flavours, where these white wines complement the flavours of oriental ethnic cuisines such as the Indian one. All its forms are perfect for immediate consumption, but can also surprise after a few years of ageing in the bottle. Among the various types of Gewurztraminer online, there are numerous notable and strongly territorial wines from Trentino Alto Adige, which are the result of the traditions of the historic wine cellars of Termeno, capable of presenting respectable products.

Modern winemaking methods, combined with a passion handed down from generation to generation, allow for the production of quality Gewurztraminer, which is available for sale online on Callmewine, at an unbeatable price.
