CANNONAU RISERVA 'SENES' ARGIOLAS 2020 DESCRIPTION

"Senes" is the first Cannonau Reserve crafted by Argiolas. From one of the most famous wine producers in Sardinia, it couldn't be anything less than a grand expression of complexity and character from the flagship grape variety of the region, Cannonau. Even the name of the wine – which in Latin refers to old age as an abundance of wisdom – suggests traits of what will be found in the glass: a wine, guardian of a rich personality, carrying a story within itself. The vineyards dedicated to "Senes" are located on the hills of Siurgius Donigala and belong to the Sisini estate, north of Cagliari. The soils are defined by calcareous marls, adding finesse to the grapes. The mistral winds and significant temperature fluctuations between day and night further contribute to producing an elegant final product.

The wine Senes Argiolas is made from 100% Cannonau grapes. The age of the vines is quite high, providing richness and distinction to the resulting grapes. The yield is intentionally kept minimal to prioritize the quality of the grapes over quantity. Alcoholic fermentation of the must occurs in steel tanks, followed by an initial maturation period in concrete tanks, where the wine undergoes malolactic fermentation. The vinification process concludes with a rest of about 12 months in small oak barrels and additional refinement in the bottle.

Cannonau Riserva "Senes" has a ruby red colour. Its aroma is complex: it initially opens with fruity notes of plum and blackberries in jam and floral notes of roses. It then reveals tertiary hints of tobacco and spices reminiscent of pepper and cloves. On the palate, it displays a full structure, enveloping the palate with softness. The tannins are elegant and naturally inclined towards evolution. The freshness of this wine predisposes it to the ageing process that will truly make it "senes" in every sense.
