Moscato

Widespread throughout the Italian peninsula, Moscato is an emblem of Italian food and wine culture, an aromatic grape of ancient origin, known since Roman times for its unmistakable and very pleasant scents of white peaches, citrus fruits, herbs and yellow flowers. The family of this vine includes numerous varieties, spread throughout all of Italy. In particular, the white one from Piedmont's Asti region stands out, from which the famous sweet and lively wine with a low alcohol content is produced, in both sparkling and semi-sparkling versions; a true excellence of the Made in Italy wine-making tradition and a great star of the festive season, to be drunk on its own or with yeast-based desserts such as pandoro and panettone.

The Origins of Moscato

The history of Moscato wine in Italy is deeply rooted in Asti, the city that is the symbol of this vine, where precious grapes have been cultivated since 1700, establishing the Piedmontese city as one of the great undisputed centres of Italian tradition. The wine, produced through incomplete fermentation in autoclaves using the Martinotti or Charmat Method, also gave rise to the very famous sweet sparkling wine, one of the best known Italian bubblies abroad.

Today, the most typical and classic expression is represented by the semi-sparkling version, also produced with the Martinotti Method, with a good residual sugar, a low alcohol content and a very pleasant and drinkable freshness. Since it is made from an aromatic grape, the scents and aromas are the same as those of the must and the flesh of the berry: white fruit, yellow flowers and aromatic herbs.

Among the many varieties of the best Moscato, the so-called yellow Moscato is certainly very interesting. It probably originated in Syria, was brought to Italy by the Greeks and then exported to the north by Venetian merchants. This explains its widespread diffusion, which is less than that of the white, but concentrated mainly in the north-eastern regions, where it is used to produce a golden-coloured, aromatic and fresh wine. This variety is excellent with cheese and pasta, drunk as an aperitif and is now increasingly popular with the flavours of Asian cuisine.

Among the different types of Moscato bottles available online in our well-stocked wine shop, you're sure to find the perfect one for you. All of them are rich in unique aromas that make it a product of great class, characterised by exceptionally intense bouquets of flavours, often sweet and fruity, recalling the aromas of peaches, herbs and scents of orange blossom.

The Right Pairings to Enhance the Flavours

The uniquely priced Moscato is a product that should be served fairly fresh and, given its characteristics as a sweet and slightly sparkling white wine, is an excellent accompaniment for desserts and sweet dishes. All the best Moscato wines are ideal to serve and enjoy in good company, savouring the various traditional desserts, as well as sweet dishes of all kinds, from cheesecakes to the more classic tiramisu, as well as biscuits and cakes; although the best accompaniment is pandoro and panettone. Whichever type of Moscato you choose, you will appreciate its particularly drinkable characteristics and the freshness that generally distinguishes it with aromas of white fruit, musk, sage and yellow flowers.

If you are looking for more delicate and sweet flavours, in our store you can also find a vast catalogue of sweet Moscato wine from the best wineries in Piedmont, directly from Monferrato Astigiano, the small homeland of our great wines, and from other parts of Italy. You can also enjoy all the fruity and aromatic herbal notes, the sparkling touch of citrus fruits, and the unmistakable taste that only the best bottles offer.
